The Boston Tea Party West Coast Swing and Lindy Hop Weekend Workshop
March 19 - 21, 2004
This was a fabulous fabulous weekend. Lessons started at 10 am on Saturday and Sunday. On Friday there were four hours of workshops going on at 5 locations at the same time. You picked which lesson you wanted to attend. On Saturday there were lessons at the five locations from 10 am until 2 pm with another hour from 7 to 8 pm. They sprinkled five general dancing hours throughout the day and evening and then from 1:30 am till 6 am there was general dancing for those hardy intense people who wanted to dance all night. Four hours of sleep seemed to be enough for a lot of people. With 15 or so pairs of instructors they kept things hopping. Instruction was excellent and there were classes for rank beginners as well as experts. Classes were a pure joy to attend.
Midnight came on with a buffet but there was an extra $16 US charge for this. It brought food smells into the dance hall though and this made it hard for those people trying to avoid food late at night which is necessary to keep weight down. Not my particular problem, but others were eyeing the food ravenously.
Dance demonstrations and Jack & Jill competitions between instructors were great to watch. The Bookends dance competition at 1:30 am Sunday morning between instructors was particularly enjoyable. A bookend competition is when same sex couples dance together and compete for free tickets to next year's event. It was hilarious. If anyone hasn't watched a bookend competition then you are missing something. It was great. I must say the men out-shone the women though.
Might there be some people in our area interested in starting up a West Coast Swing club? Let me know if you are interested.
