First, we must discuss what a manipulation is. A manipulation is a small force put on a spinal bone by a chiropractor, to move it a tiny amount, within its normal range. This small force is given very quickly in a fast short movement that requires great skill to deliver. A popping sound is usually heard and felt. This is normal and good.
This manipulation is given by the chiropractor using the hands. Numerous scientific studies have shown this type of manipulation, given by the hands, to be safe and effective in relieving acute and chronic back pain. Scientists and researchers call this manipulation Spinal Manipulative Therapy or SMT for short.
When would a person need SMT? If a spinal bone becomes stuck and does not move properly, that is it does not function the way it is supposed to, then freeing up that motion becomes necessary. If you don’t free up the movement of the spinal bones then the cartilage surfaced of the spinal joints tend to degenerate as Dr. Salter, a well respected medical researcher, showed with research on rabbits more that a decade ago. This degeneration is what we call arthritis and the inflammatory process.
The SMT achieves this goal of restoring function very effectively. Massage therapy, physiotherapy and acupuncture will not achieve this goal of restored function.

The chiropractor’s job then is to check the spine and free up what is not working properly. The forces that are used are small and very focussed.
Medical doctors have not had training in chiropractic procedures and may think the forces are large and traumatic but they are wrong and misinformed on that issue. They are slowly coming around to understanding this excellent form of Complementary Alternative Health Care.
With this background understanding, let’s discuss food and pain a bit now. Food is used by the body for many purposes. It is a source of little batteries that the body uses for energy. Food is also used by the body to make hormones that regulate the inflammatory process.
Oils are absorbed whole and pretty much undigested and are use as a precursor molecule to make hormones called prostaglandins. There are good prostaglandins and bad prostaglandins. The good and the bad prostaglandins come from different oils and these oils go through different metabolic pathways.
Prostaglandins E1 and E3 make inflammation better while Prostaglandin E2 makes inflammation worse. If you eat the wrong foods your arthritic inflammation will be worse and you will be in more pain. Unfortunately the typical North American diet is filled with the bad oils.

A person can get stuck in a predicament where the loss of motion of the spine leads to degenerative inflammation (as Dr. Salter indicated), and the food one eats makes the inflammation WORSE. The body can then end up in threshold situation right on the verge of pain. Anything that comes along may push the body over the threshold into pain. A chiropractic spinal adjustment (manipulation), may be that extra push to bring about temporary pain symptoms.
But, it may also be another meal of PRD-poison foods (Pain Relief Diet Poison Foods), that pushes the body over the threshold into pain and not the spinal manipulation at all. Chiropractic spinal manipulations do not cause arthritis, disc degeneration, or stroke, in normal people but they can push an inflamed joint over the edge into temporary pain that usually goes away in a few days. But, so can food.
And so, when someone gets more pain after a chiropractic manipulation, but that pain comes on the next day, not immediately after the treatment, then food is the culprit, not the chiropractor. You may be blaming the chiropractor for something the food is causing. When you eliminate all the PRD-Poison foods the chiropractic adjustments go much easier.
